Hayward AquaVac 6 Series

AquaVac 650
I started my career on an engineering team at Hayward Pools. We were tasked with developing their next generation of flagship robotic pool cleaners, the AquaVac 650.
The AquaVac 6 series utilizes a Dyson style Hydro-Cyclone assembly for filtration. This means while the user interaction remains easy and simple, the mechanics and components inside are incredibly complex.
I was primarily focused on the canister and cyclone design. Along with one of Hayward's most talented engineers, Graham Hayes, together we developed this 18 cyclone filter assembly. We ran countless simulations to calculate filter efficiency and pressure drop off. While Graham crunched the numbers I adjusted geometry.
One of my greatest contributions was the addition of a drive shaft to the filter assembly. This allowed us to get the impeller to the top of the cleaner to pump the water but keep the pump motor at the bottom to save footprint and stability.
Note: I am not responsible for the animation shown here, it is only for illustrative purposes to show how the cleaner works in more detail.
